Target Audience

Class Philosophy

• The SAT Core class is designed to give students an introduction into prose fiction and develop critical reading skills at the early stages of preparation for the SAT reading exam.
• The class is designed to engage students in discussion, writing, and develop the skills necessary to solve reading passages in the future.
• Instead of focusing on problem solving, students are taught to understand the deeper philosophical concepts behind many of the classical literature pieces and develop an affinity for appreciating the literary techniques authors use to convey the scene, setting, and character development.

Class Structure

1st hour : Reading Skills & Analysis of Short Stories

In the first hour, students will read classic short stories, learn how to annotate and analyze the passages, which will be followed by in class discussion, short answers and academic essays based on the content.

2nd hour : Reading & Discussion on Articles(non-fiction) and Academic Writing Assignment

In the second part of the class, students will read articles that provide historical background and context about the authors and eras for the literature portion of the class. In addition, many of the articles and short stories will focus on non-fiction content with a background in historical events.

3rd hour : Discussion on Novels (Fiction) and Vocabulary

In the final part of the class, students will discuss and analyze the novels assigned for homework from the previous class. In addition, the vocabulary will focus on critical reading skills by having the students apply the vocabulary they have learned in crosswords and other vocabulary activities. The vocabulary portion of the class will emphasize the figurative and colloquial uses of the words and test students on their ability to connect words, understand metaphors, link analogies and also reinforce their spelling, grammar, and informal usage of common phrases and figurative language.

• 문제 해결에 집중하는 대신, 학생들은 많은 고전 문학 작품 뒤에 숨겨진 더 깊은 철학적 개념을 이해하고, 저자들이 장면, 설정 및 성격 개발을 전달하기 위해 사용하는 문학 기법을 평가하는 친화력을 개발하도록 학습됩니다.

수업 구조

첫 번째 시간 : 독서의 기술 및 단편소설 분석

첫 시간에는 학생들이 고전적인 단편소설을 읽고, 주석 달기, 구절 분석 등을 학습하며, 그 내용을 바탕으로 한 수업 토론, 단답형, 학술 논술 등이 이어집니다.

두 번째 시간 : 기사 읽기 및 토론(논픽션) 및 학술적 작문 과제

수업 2부에서는 학생들이 수업의 문학 부분에 대한 작가와 시대에 대한 역사적 배경과 맥락을 제공하는 기사를 읽을 것입니다. 또한, 많은 기사와 단편들이 역사적 사건을 배경으로 한 논픽션 콘텐츠에 초점을 맞출 것입니다.

세 번째 시간 : 소설과 어휘에 대한 토론

수업의 마지막 부분에서, 학생들은 이전 수업의 숙제로 배정된 소설을 토론하고 분석합니다. 또한, 어휘는 학생들이 배운 어휘를 crossword puzzle과 다른 어휘 활동에 적용하도록 함으로써 비판적 독해 능력에 초점을 맞출 것입니다. 수업의 어휘 부분은 단어들의 비유적이고 구어적인 사용을 강조할 것이며, 학생들이 단어들을 연결하고, 은유를 이해하고, 유사점을 연결하며, 또한 그들의 철자, 문법, 그리고 일반적인 구절과 비유 언어의 비공식적인 사용을 강화할 것입니다.
